OneShot World Machine Edition is one of those perfect little self-contained indie story games that I believe everyone should give a chance. It was initially released way back in 2014 on PC only before getting console releases late last year (2022). OneShot has you guiding a child (Niko) through a dying world that they have been placed in as its messiah as they attempt to save it. As the world’s “god,” you communicate directly to Niko and aid them in their journey as they overcome whatever obstacles they come across. It is a sort of topdown puzzle adventure game. Puzzles in this game are not too difficult while still being pretty interesting as some must be solved through the little virtual desktop that you can access.Really though, you’ll get the most out of the game if you just sit down and play through it while allowing yourself to really care about Niko. I played through the game with my girlfriend and we definitely got really attached and allowed ourselves to care about the outcomes of characters throughout the game.

The game truly shines if you can enter that mindset to the point where my girlfriend both sad and happy cried before it was all said and done. Overall, the story can be a bit clichéd in how it progresses and how the characters act, but it’s just nice interacting with the world and people while watching Niko figure things out. It certainly also gets pretty meta in moments (which is overdone in games/shows now but works really well here). Regarding achievements: All achievements are technically missable though the game is very short. For the 3 collectible achievements, they are saved across playthroughs. You must complete 2 (different “Solstice”) playthrough to collect all the Wallpapers and Friends. This is simply a component of the game though. The game’s story requires 2 very different playthroughs to get through it. I would personally count it as one longer playthrough as it is a continuous narrative. There are 3 main areas that you cannot go back to after you go to the next: the Barrrens, the Glen, and the Refuge. Just make sure you complete all the requirements if you follow a guide for progressing to the next. I personally did everything without a guide basically, then did one more normal run to get the couple things I missed.

The achievements are very easy just missable.
