Explore the enigmatic past of Catherine Markwell, a pivotal figure in the dark history of Siren’s Well. This game plays and runs nicely. It looks very good graphically as well. There’s a lot of fan service here also. It’s clearly inspired by horror innovators such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill. First and foremost: This is a SURVIVAL HORROR game that is not for everyone. But for its target audience, it is an absolute gem that must not be overlooked. Fans of modern games may find the stiff animations, awkward controls, and slow movement speeds off-putting, but for anyone willing to look past these (so-called) flaws, Violet is a pleasant surprise and something of a “diamond in the rough” among modern horror games.

Violet rewards exploration and careful attention to detail. You will want to investigate every nook and cranny of the forest, cabin, and castle. Every vase holds something of value that, especially on higher difficulties, does not feel like a simple “filler” item that you will never use. And something about kicking the unique collectibles for each character is incredibly compelling and makes you want to explore every square inch of the map. This game has an absolutely wonderful atmosphere. Generic though it may be, I was spooked several times by the occasional suit of armor sitting in the corner of the castle. However, like virtually any other horror game, it suffers from the “familiarity” disease; that is, as you learn how the game and enemies operate, the less scary it becomes. This is not an indictment of this game specifically, as it introduces threats at a reasonable pace that keeps the player guessing, but there will come a point where you know what to expect and will be less afraid of sticking your head through.
