I especially want to finish a game before I review it but Castle in the Darkness is such a dud I don’t think I can power through it. It is miserable to play and not due to any personal disagreement I might have with the I Wanna Be The Guy school of game design. CitD is just a dull, tedious slog that substitutes Mario Maker amateur troll levels in place of anything approachable or dare I say “fun.”

Monsters attack, only one knight can defeat them all and become the hero, the princess is kawaii as heck, yadda yadda, story light gameplay big. No big story payoffs in sight here, just as most NES classics liked it. CitD gives you a little guy with a terrible floaty jump, imprecise unreliable mobility, a dodgy hitbox and a really terrible starter weapon. Another lock on target for historical accuracy. The first few stages of CitD are reasonable. Nothing should be wrong here, right?
