Stemming from Mexican folklore, piñatas are originally papier-mâché animals filled with candy and confetti that children literally beat with sticks. In the game, these creatures come to life and roam freely in the wild while waiting to find refuge in a garden that will welcome them. Halfway between Pokémon, The Sims and Animal Crossing , which it borrows from each a little bit, Viva Piñata therefore offers to learn about the simple pleasures of gardening and breeding in a good mood.

Dropped without further explanation in the middle of Piñata Island, the player’s first steps are not the most obvious. Fortunately, a young native named Leafos takes great care to teach apprentice gardeners the basics of the trade which will turn the most persevering into real “gardeners“. We thus discover how to transform a plot of unsanitary land into a small colorful park, a necessary step to attract the famous piñatas.
